Why is the District choosing an A/B schedule rather than an AA/BB schedule?

Finley teachers and administrators have selected the A/B schedule because of the educational benefits it provides students. Specifically, the A/B schedule decreases the number of consecutive days in which students have no real-time contact with their teachers. (See tables below.)

In regards to cleaning between cohorts, trained District staff will conduct a thorough cleaning at the end of each school day to assure all school environments stay safe and healthy for students and staff coming the next day.

How will student groupings (e.g. A group/B group) be determined?

Principals and administrators are developing groupings by family last name and bus route. (Considerations for students in families with differing last names are being made.) To the extent possible, priority will be given for students within the same family to follow the same weekly schedule. Schools will contact all families by September 25th with information about grouping assignments.

What will class sizes look like?

Under the hybrid A/B schedule, the number of students in class for on-site learning each day will be reduced. On average, 8-15 students can be in a classroom at one time and still maintain six-foot distancing. Specific numbers will vary by classroom size and school building. Daily teacher caseloads will remain the same.

How do parents let the school know if we want to select 100% remote learning for our child(ren)?

Finley School District will continue to offer an online-only program for all students K-12 whose families prefer to wait for their student(s) to attend school in-person. Any parent/guardian who does NOT want their child(ren) to transition to the hybrid in-person learning must complete THIS FORM at least one week prior to your student’s scheduled start date for hybrid learning. (See schedule below.)

Elementary Education (K-5)

When elementary students are on-site for school, will they receive recess?

Yes, students will receive recess each day. The state Department of Health has confirmed that students may remove face coverings during recess, as long as six-foot distancing is maintained.

Will elementary students continue meeting virtually with their teachers via Zoom on their remote learning days?

No. When elementary students transition to hybrid learning, they will not be expected to meet in real-time (synchronously) with their teachers. In the hybrid model, the remote learning days for elementary students will be asynchronous and include packet work and/or assignments on their learning management platforms (Seesaw, Google Classroom).

Secondary Education (6-12)

How will classes such as music, choir, band, and PE be offered?

Our teachers will continue to find creative ways to adapt and teach these classes as we transition into hybrid learning. We will temporarily postpone playing instruments in order to meet current health requirements and are awaiting further direction from the local health department. All classes will follow state and local health requirements to maintain the safety of students and staff.

How will class periods and schedules change in the hybrid model?

Days when students are not attending school in-person will be asynchronous remote learning days. (Similar to the current Wednesday schedule.) Additionally, students will attend all class periods during their in-person days. For example, a middle school student in Cohort A will attend periods 1-6 at school in-person on Monday and Thursday, and will learn remotely from home on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday. Wednesdays will remain asynchronous remote learning days for students in all cohorts, in order to provide preparation time and professional development for staff. Teachers will communicate their virtual office hours for students to contact them during remote learning days.
